The student Branch of IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society AUTh and the Laboratory of Signal Processing and Biomedical Technology of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) AUTh invite you to a Matlab Workshop with theme: Segmentation of brain MRI images

The workshop will take place on Friday 27 May 2016 at 6:00-8:00 PM. in Room A8 at the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Polytechnic AUTh.

Research Field
The need for automated segmentation of the brain or parts of it from MRI images has developed in recent decades an ever growing field of research.

In a magnetic head scanning section coexists, except of the brain, and other structures such as the skull, connective tissues and cerebrospinal fluid. The effort to isolate the cerebral region results from the substantial need for non-invasive and simultaneously accurate possible measurement / observation of characteristics of the brain or parts of it in order to help to medical diagnosis or study of the influence of various factors on these traits.

Workshop:
In collaboration with the Laboratory of Signal Processing and Biomedical Technology ECE AUTh we will implement an algorithm in Matlab environment for obtaining approximate brain region from T1 MRI sections (DICOM standard) using basic morphological operators and empirical thresholding of the histogram of the image.

* Software requirements: The algorithm has been tested to work well in 2012b Matlab (Image Processing Toolbox) – newer versions are definitely compatible.

* Participants are asked to come, having already downloaded on their laptops the data that we will process. (The data is available through a link after the completion the entry form.)
